(Editor’s note: Grandma’s comment in the scrapbook was “At the Crabbing. ‘The crab bunch.'” What summer could this have been? What do you remember about it?)

  1. This is the summer that a sea turtle laid her eggs at the foot of our steps. The people from the Bogue Banks Sea Turtle Program came over, carefully dug up the nest, inventoried and numbered the eggs, put them all back and covered them up. I think that may have been the year we got those stickers by the sea-porch light switches about turning them off at night to not confuse the sea turtles. I don’t remember how the Program heard about our nest, but I know we found it before they came over. GrandMa may have called the aquarium.
I can’t remember the year, but the best bet is an estimate based on the looks/clothes of the recognizable folks; Laurie, Claire, Jessica, Julie, Penny, and Julianna (GM was timeless). From her appearance, Claire may have been around middle school then, which would bracket the time to 1993-1995.
I’m not sure why GM connected it to the Crab Bunch unless there was something else going on with them that week that was on her mind.

  2. I remember this day… what a fun happening at the beach. Yes, Bobby has the right time frame, but I couldn’d say exactly when.

  3. My guess is the summer between 94 and 95 from the length of my hair. Haha. Brownie-locks.

  4. It has to be 95 because my Mom is wearing her Yellowstone shirt and we had just vacationed there earlier that summer.

  5. Good work, sleuth Jessica! And follow-up question: Do you think this set of photos goes with the ones of Michaela and Matthew that are two posts earlier?

  6. You know, the statement about the Crab Bunch is written on the page of the scrap book. I bet Grandma moved the pictures to a different page and that was just left there. I’m sure she knew these pictures were about turtle eggs and her grandchildren! čÖé
