Spiced Tea

In Uncategorized on December 8, 2009 at 8:41 am

2 qts boiling water
6 tea bags
2 sticks cinnamon
1 tablespoon whole cloves

Steep together 10 minutes then drain.

2 Cups sugar
1 quart Orange juice

Heat together & serve just before boiling.

(Editor’s note: The first notecard adds lemon juice, pineapple juice and gingerale, and the second notecard uses saccharine. When was it that Grandma/Momma/Bee started using saccharine in foods?

In Grandma/Momma/Bee’s book of handwritten recipes, this recipe shares a page with the one for Iced Tea.)

  1. Momma/Grandma used saccharine for as long as I can remember. We used to joke about the scientific reports that if a mouse ate 3 times his weigh daily in saccharine that it was bad for his health. We all agreed that we weren’t eating that much. We thought it was not as bad for you as white sugar was – although there was plenty of sugar in Grandma’s cooking, she did try to eliminate it from beverages.

  2. I love spiced tea… although, somewhere along the road we started calling it Russian tea. Also I usually also put apple juice in mine along with the OJ, tea, cloves and cinnamon. It also smells wonderful whether you want to drink it or not.
