We had an artesian well and the water was wonderful, not like the sulfur water you have heard about. Most everyone in those days had outside bathroom which were called “Out Houses”. We had one from previous years but only used it now if there was too much traffic on the one bathroom inside of the house. We had four lavatories in the house so you didn’t always have to get into the bathroom itself .One lavatory was upstairs. We used slop jars up stairs for company and at night and I remember it was always J’Mae and my job to empty them.

We never had hot water so when you took a bath you needed to heat water on the stove . Of course in winter a water kettle was in front of your fire place, so you pretty well had hot water available then.. Each room in the house had its own fireplace and that was considered a luxury in those days.

We lived in a large two story white house that my parents had built in 1920 with porches all around and a porch up stairs as well . I do not remember this but they would tell stories about me always climbing around on the rafters. Once I fell while jumping and bumped and cut my head (Probably explains a lot) But I do not remember this. Funny, J’Mae told me about a year ago that she had told me to jump.

The house had three large bedrooms upstairs and three down stairs. Large wide halls running through the house and a bathroom on the first floor. In our house, Mamma and Daddy had the bedroom left of the front door, J’Mae and I slept in the one directly behind and next to the bath . Howard was across the hall from the bath and Floy always had the room to the left going up stairs. Other two bedrooms were used as guest rooms until years later. Then Mamma made a dining room den combination out of their bed room and J’Mae and I moved up stairs to the sleeping porch.

(Editor’s note: If you can’t tell, the date stamp on the back of the photograph is “September 2001.” Given the speed with which Bob/Daddy/Granddaddy developed his film, I’m not sure if that’s when this photo was actually taken, or if that’s finally when he got around to developing it. Was it from a trip he and Bee/Momma/Grandma made to Round O that year?)

My parents were William Benjamin Garris and my mother Minnie Anna Dodd Garris. Both were college graduates (which was unusual in those days ) and both had taught school. Daddy continued teaching most of his life, ran a farm and was post master at Round O. My mother has ridden horseback in earlier days to teach school, but when I knew her she ran a country store in which she sold almost anything and everything. She also did the work in the post office as Daddy was off teaching school most of the day.. I was practically raised us in this store- my earliest memories are of the store. I clerked every since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My father later became an ordained minister who served as an interim pastor or did evangelistic revivals over the Association.
