Even though Grandpa had no formal education himself, he was a firm believer of education. He hired private tutors for his children who came and lived with the family and taught the children.. Mamma said that that they had a Catholic as a tutor once. On Friday she fasted and would not eat a bite of food at meal time. After every body had gone to bed on Friday night, they found her back in the kitchen eating every thing in sight. Mamma and Aunt Gus both went through College at what now is Furman University , Baptist in Greenville, SC. At the time it was Furman Female College as coed students did not attend classes together and were combined later.

Maybe that Catholic tutor believed that Friday ended at sunset. I guess that would have made it a “Saturday feast”. 🙂
